This tiny little application has only one function: to change the contrast configuration of the ClearType settings for Windows XP. But what is this ClearType about anyway? ClearType is a feature intended to smooth the display of fonts on LCD monitors. However, this tool can also achieve some improvements in CRT monitors. That’s all, but if you think about it, it’s a pretty important function nowadays when the LCD monitors have become the standard among the PC users around the world.
As you can imagine, this applications is very easy to use and intuitive. No many options to choose from or features to understand. So, how does it work?
When you open the application what you see is a window divided in two sections. On the top section you can choose among three options:
“No font smoothing”: so the application does nothing at all.
“Standard font smoothing”: the default setting when you first run the application.
“ClearType font smoothing”: when you choose this option, the slide bar control that there’s below the option buttons will become active. Sliding the control sideways you can change the smooth level. When you move it to the right you increase it and to the left decrease it. The default value is 1400 in a scale which goes from 1000 to 2200.
As you change values on the top section of the window, the bottom section display a sample text to see the changes. You can select font type and size for the sample text.
In addition, you can change the pixel format between RGB and BGR depending on the type of monitor you use. If you don’t know exactly what kind of monitor you are using, just test each option and stay with the one that achieve the best results.
Once you have done the changes you like you can either minimize the application to tray or close it. If you close it the changes made remain active.
This cool application is a freeware license so you can enjoy it for free.
